An article about Karabakh appeared in last week’s edition of Washington Post. The article was unequivocally written against Azerbaijan. One could come across falsification of historical facts, as well as denial of widely-admitted truths. Author Will Englund demonstrates sick imagination, noting that Karabakh is a historical Armenian land and that it was annexed to Azerbaijan in early XX century by Stalin.
Author continues impudently:
In 1988, Karabakh’s leaders said they wanted to be joined to Armenia proper, just to the west. Moscow never really answered, but in Azerbaijan, pogroms were launched against ethnic Armenians in response, with dozens killed.
I doubt Will Englund is unaware of the fact that hundred thousands of Azerbaijanis were deported from Armenia during Soviet rule. Author aims to describe Armenians as constantly oppressed nation and turned a blind eye to these facts. (You can read about it more in Hikmet Huseinov’s blog)
Another lie:
The president of the Armenian republic, Levon Ter-Petrossian, accused Gorbachev of trying to blackmail Armenia into joining a new Soviet treaty of union.
